“Wat mij voornamelijk bijgebleven is van Sail is de geweldige sfeer die hiermee gepaard ging. Eigenlijk was het een groot festijn waarbij verscheidene landen met hun eigen culturen, subculturen en allerlei bevolkingsgroepen samen kwamen tot 1 team en aan het einde zelfs een beetje als een familie.

Doordat je op een kleine ruimte zit, meedoet aan een race en ontzettend afhankelijk bent van elkaar zijn er meerdere malen momenten geweest dat je een spiegel voor je neus gezet wordt en je zo een hele goede mogelijkheden hebt tot ontwikkeling van je eigen kunnen. De normale regels gelden niet want uiteraard wil iedereen winnen en als je maatje niet hard genoeg de zeilen bij zet, zal jij twee keer zo hard moeten trekken. In het begin gaan de taken nog een beetje chaotisch maar na twee weken samen te hebben gewerkt waren de teams goed geoliede machines die precies wisten waar ze mee bezig waren. Dit klinkt allemaal ontzettend serieus maar alles gaat op de een of andere manier geheel vanzelf en voornamelijk ook spelenderwijs. De voldoening die de opgebouwde contacten mij brachten, de voldane wachten en het echt een beetje zorgen voor elkaar mij gegeven heeft is een gevoel dat ik op weinig plekken terug heb gevonden. Hierbij heb ik het nog niet eens over de belachelijk mooie zonsondergangen en opkomsten die voor de rest van mijn leven in mijn geheugen gegrift staan. Ook is de sterrenhemel op zee een van de meest bijzondere aspecten van de race waar ik hoop dat iedereen net zo verwonderd van zal zijn als ik het was.

Desondanks dat er tijdens stormen zeer zeker ontberingen geleden zijn ben ik tijdens de reizen die ik mee heb mogen maken geheel tot mijzelf gekomen, rust kunnen vinden door de mooie natuur om mij heen, en heb ik me als een echte overwinnaar en overlever gevoeld wat uiteindelijk tot een tatoeage geleid heeft tijdens mijn laatste trip als gedenksteen aan een van de meest bijzondere ervaringen van mijn leven.

“I woke up listening to everyone on the corridor shouting, ‘we can swim, jump into the sea’. I thought it was a joke, but it wasn’t. The water was very cold, (and not as salty as in Portugal) we did like Tarzan, holding a sheet from the fore course and jumped, yelling and screaming, into the sea. Everybody was clapping and laughing. Toumas from Finland sat on deck playing the jambee… So good!!

After that the wind returned and changed direction, that’s why we had to tack all night.
It was more or less 3 o’clock in the afternoon but that was the beginning of a rough night. I only slept about 1 hour between 20am – 5am. But it was the most exciting night of this journey!! It was awesome, pulling ropes, big waves, strong winds, raining… It was fantastic!”

Janine: Sail your life and SEE YOU AT SEA!

Monique: Tall Ships Race 2001 on the Swan fan Makkum. The Leg was Antwerp – Alesund and we took the route along the UK coast. Was a huge gamble in the wind predictions, but it worked out fine, we finshed second! The night before the finish was superb with all the red en green lights showing up on our leeward side!

Frank: Sailing in a summerbreeze, steering outside, alone, while the rest of the crew was having dinner below decks. It was a friendly sea, sun was setting and some dolphins having fun around the ship. The wind was slowly increasing so we gained speed and stars where showing up, one by one.

Een tijdje geleden ben ik in contact gekomen met At Sea Sail training, en ik wil graag mee op een van hun internationale uitwisselingen. Het lijkt me geweldig om met zeven of meer nationaliteiten op een schip te leven, en veel te leren aan boord.
Jammer is alleen dat mijn reis veel geld kost, ik op kamers woon, en dat dus niet kan betalen. Monique, van At Sea Sail Training,
gaf me de tip om eens wat bedrijven of een plaatselijke Rotary te schrijven, met de vraag of die wilden sponsoren. Wat ik ben gaan doen.
Eerst vond ik het maar lastig, ik kom niet uit een arm gezin of een sociaal geïsoleerde omgeving of zo, ben geen probleem jongere en vond dus dat ik niet voor een beurs in aanraking kwam. Maar ja, als je 1000 euro zou moeten betalen voor een reis, kan ik niet mee.. Als dat ineens 500 euro wordt, word het toch mogelijk, dus ben ik brieven gaan schrijven.
Het is een mooi alternatief om toch met een uitwisseling mee te kunnen. Mensen vinden het vaak belangrijk dat jij je goed ontwikkeld binnen de maatschappij, leert samenwerken en zelfstandig worden, en jijzelf waarschijnlijk ook. Dus wie zou je niet willen steunen!?
Dus met jouw eigen bijdrage plus je eigen geworven fonds, kan je wel mee. Inmiddels heb ik twee bedrijven gevonden die erg enthousiast reageerden en mij wel op weg willen helpen. Beide sponsoren nu 250 euro, een kaartje waard, niet waar?
Misschien zie ik jou ook wel op zee?!

As a teacher I appreciate seeing and working with students on the Tall Ships. Lessons in this environment are learned and learned quickly, students listen, they absorb what is going on, and take in so many different aspects to sailing that they learn in such a variety of ways. The training involves classical teacher-lecture style in addition to small group work, and full team work on board. Students get the chance to take the theoretical and put it to the practical. This is true adventure!
Having worked in International schools for the past 16 years, the mix of cultures in an international school is very much like on the Tall Ship. You have students from different backgrounds, different languages, and different cultures all working towards one goal: To Sail. I have seen so many students grow and mature on the ship from being once timid and shy to finding true confidence in their abilities and being able to excel in something. It is a life transforming experience no matter what age you join.
I love it. I love seeing students become sailors in a short time… and I love teaching on the ship as the results are far more tangible and long lasting”.

Lord Nelson – speciale reis

Join the Lord Nelson for this special Youth in Action exchange program. This year the voyage will start in Aberdeen (UK). From there the voyage will continue to Amsterdam (NL) and will finish in Hartlepool (UK). Depending on weather, tides and wind the ship may visit another port.

International Exchange
Besides the professional crew, 7 trainees per country can participate with all kind of different physical disabilities. A total of 35 trainees with nationalities from Belgium, France, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands will board the Lord Nelson to experience this special trip together.

During this trip you’ll be sailing with trainees from all over Europe. Together you will sail and do more! As well as sailing, you and the other trainees will organise games, national dinners, European song festivals, or whatever you would like to do. Meet people from other cultures, enjoy the differences and see the similarities between the countries. You may make friendships to last for the rest of your
life

Sponsorship
This trip is sponsored by the European organisations ‘Youth in Action’ . Therefore we can offer you a reduced price. This includes full board and excludes transportation from and to the ports and drinks at the bar. In addition, 70% of transportation is being paid for, so you only have to pay 30% of this amount.

Costs
The trip takes 13 days and starts on the 30th of July and will end at the 12th of August 2011.

The normal price for this voyage is € 1675 but for people aged between 15-25 years there is a special price of €1195 The price includes food and accommodation on the ship. Excluding transfers.
